Marathon Training - 20 Miles

Monday

Today is labor day here in the US and I put my weekend long run off until today.  When I run at my MAF pace it makes my long runs take forever.  My MAF (Maximun Aerobic Function) pace dictates that I keep my heart rate at around 130bpm for this 50 year old runner.  Today's run was a 20 mile run and it took me just a little over 5 hours to complete.  I started off at a very easy pace keeping my heart rate at around 120.  I gradually picked up the pace for each of the first 10 miles. Abd tried to keep it steady after that.  Unfortunately, my smart watch died at around 15 miles, because I forgot to charge the day before. The charge normally last for 2-3 days.  So, I'm not sure how the heart rate did for the last five miles.  But, I did end up walking the two miles. Averaged around an 11:30 minute/mile.

Since, my training schedule is off a little this week, I will probably do some cross training tomorrow morning and let my legs and feet have a recovery day.  Then I'll be working on some speed drills later this week.  This coming weekend I am scheduled for a 10K race, so I also want to make sure my legs are fresh for the race.

For breakfast we had bacon, sausage links, and scrambled eggs and few strawberries and blackberries.  Then had some pork rinds and sour cream and chive dip for a snack later on.  For dinner we had chicken soft tacos using low carb tortillas.

For the run this morning I didn't plan ahead very well and didn't have quite enough water, so that negativity impacted the last few miles of the run.  Also, didn't have anything for nutrition either. Normally for my long runs of more than six miles I also like to bring along a few nuts and I didn't bring that either.

Tuesday -Lunch

We went out for lunch today and I ordered a Steak House Salad.  I would estimate it 3-4 cups salad, 6 oz. steak and ranch dressing.  Sometimes the problem with eating out is figuring out all the macros.  I estimate it to be around 600 -800 calories

Marathon Training - Week 2

Monday - Rain Today started week 2 of marathon training.   Today was a speed work day. On the schedule for today, was 3 sets of 1 mile runs at my 5K race pace. I did some stretches this morning before running which seemed to aggravate my ankle just a little.  Just for a little added challenge, it was raining with a blowing wind today.  It was a fairly warm 72F, so at least it wasn't a cold rain. I find that running in the rain helps your mental game by training your mind to deal with adversity.  It also helps you boost confidence. Suddenly when your the only one out running and you don't see any of the normal people you see out running you feel all the more like the toughest runner. For lunch, I had keto nachos made with pork rinds, hamburger, mozzarella cheese, and sour cream.  For dinner, we had pot roast and broccoli.

Marathon Training - Week Three

Sunday - Rest Day This week the milage jumps up.  On Monday and Wednesday I'll be running six miles and on Tuesday and Thursday five miles. Then on Saturday it will be 12 miles.  There may be some sweet equity involved this week. In any case today is a rest day.  So, this evening I will just be doing some stretching to get the muscles relaxed for this week. For lunch today I had steak and eggs and then afterwards are a few pecans.  If all goes as planned this should be my only meal for the day. Marathon training does require you to be extreme.  But it does requires daily consistency to slowly building up your endurance to achieve the extreme. Remember to Keep Calm and Keto On!
